Best Treatment For Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eye syndrome is a condition in which the eye becomes drier than usual. When this happens, tears cannot drain from the eye and the condition is known as dried eyes. There are different types of treatments for dry eyes. In some cases, simple eye drops can be enough to remedy the problem. But if it’s getting worse, or you’ve tried everything else, there are more options available.

The main treatment for dry eye syndrome is to moisten the eye with artificial tears. If your condition is severe, you will likely have to wear special eye drops while the medication takes effect, for a brief period of time. Other alternative medicines include choleric, including pilocarpine. These drugs help stimulate tear production in the eyes.

Sometimes, however, the condition is caused by irritants on the front surface of the eyelids. This can be from the weather, such as cold air blowing onto the eyelids. It can also be from the cosmetics that you’re using. For these situations, the best treatment is a humidifier, which can also increase moisture in the eye. This should be done at night.

Another treatment for dry eye syndrome is an ointment specifically formulated to reduce the inflammation and reduce the puffiness. These ointments should be very similar to the type you use for your regular eye problem. They are often available over the counter, but some require a prescription. Some of the prescriptions specifically for this condition include an anti-inflammatory and a fatty acid anti-wrinkle cream.

How To Cure Very Dry Eyes

Other ways to treat dry eye syndrome are through contact lens wear. Since it’s not always possible to prevent dry eye syndrome, this type of treatment can help to ease the symptoms somewhat. You can get an FDA approved drug called adapalene to help with the inflammation. A clinical trial involving about 1200 people found that it reduced the dryness by more than half.

A newer drug on the block called flibanserin is a little different. It’s a nasal anti-inflammatory that can be used along with other remedies if your dry eye symptoms are severe. It works by reducing the amount of water you produce, so you won’t have as much of that fluid collecting in the eyes. There are currently no studies showing any downsides to taking flibanserin. But it’s important to note that this drug is not yet approved for treating any type of dry eye condition, including the type known as xerophthalmia, which can cause inflammation too.

How To Treat Dry Eye Symptoms

If the dry eye syndrome is caused primarily by keratoconjunctivitis sicca, an antihistamine may be able to relieve your symptoms. Commonly called “dry eye”, keratoconjunctivitis sicca is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the tissue that lines the eye. Drugs for this condition include albuterol and ipratropium. The other drugs in this class are all have relatively long half lives, so you’ll need to take them for at least a year to get relief. And remember, you should never stop taking your medications even though your symptoms seem to improve.

All these treatments can help reduce your symptoms, but if they don’t cure the underlying cause, the symptoms will return. For some people, particularly those with severe cases, there isn’t much that can be done short of lifestyle changes and artificial tear film replacement surgery. Even then, the symptoms are likely to return after a while. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is only one cause of dry eye; other causes include allergies, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), allergies to protein and enzymes in the eye, tumors on the eyelid, tears, and scar tissue. In any case, it’s best to see your eye doctor to determine the exact cause. And don’t forget to take your medications as directed!
